Key issues This short, simple activity was developed when it became clear that some students enrolling on my research methods courses did not have a basic understanding of the differences between primary and secondary sources.

Beginner’ includes inexperienced undergraduates, usually those in their first year, and students on adult and community courses or private training programmes who do not have research methods experience. ‘Intermediate’ includes undergraduates with more experience, usually in their second or third year, and students on adult and community courses and private training programmes who have some experience of research methods training or research projects in employment. ‘Advanced’ includes postgraduate students, students in doctoral training centres, research assistants, research officers and other students/trainees who have research experience.
