Use painter’s tape to secure template and fabric to your work surface when transferring the pattern. 52 S T I TCHE D GIF T S 3 Mount your fabric into your embroidery hoop. For this project, I used a stabilizer behind my fabric to help create a sturdy surface for the satin-stitched key. 4 Stitch your piece! Here’s what I did: KEY: 6-ply padded satin stitch, outlined first in a 6-ply backstitch. The tricky part is stitching around the three circles at the top of the key. Work in sections starting at the widest part, then the center, and then the sides of the key.

Don’t forget to trace the text guidelines, two horizontal and one central line, to help you line up your text. Place the tracing paper over the alphabet template, lining up the bottom of the desired letters and numbers with the text guideline. Trace the letters and numbers with a pencil or Sharpie. Try to space the numbers evenly, about ¼ in/6 mm apart. Check to make sure the bottom of the letters on the alphabet template meet the straight text guidelines on the tracing paper. Use the vertical line to center your text.
