All who live in the United States are aware of many of the consequences of our current addiction epidemic. The terror of AIDS effecting both high and low risk people, the senseless shootings in the cities, the loss of innocent lives on the highways are reported daily in our news media. The continuing emotional pain of a family member who has suffered verbal, physical and even sexual abuse from an addicted spouse or parent is more private but no less devastating.

Jim was still seen by a physical therapist on a regular and frequent basis, but his doctors had less time for him. Since pain medications had helped him, they were continued but with less supervision. Jim seemed like a good person to the staff; he certainly deserved, as much as anyone, to have his pain relieved. His specialists were needed on other cases that seemed more important; so, when he did see a doctor, it was at one of the hospital clinics. Often, his physician was someone who had not seen him before.

No one has the right to deny the success of another. If any cure has actually helped even one person, then it has merit, if only for that one individual. The danger of these other paths is many fail the people who try them. The true danger is that many of these paths to recovery are used as alternates to well accepted paths to recovery. Instead, if used to strengthen current approaches, these could conceivably increase the chance of a successful recovery. The natural history of addiction is quite varied.
