The Editors have excitement in offering another quantity within the se ries to our foreign viewers. maybe the main major occasion of the passing yr has been the booklet by means of the IAEA of its learn of the prob lem of continuous radiation defense within the lands surrounding Chernobyl. the key foreign undertaking undertaken in 1990 and stated in 1991 is worthy interpreting, not just for its review of the way radiation safeguard intervention will be utilized de facto in coincidence stipulations, yet both for its account of the fashionable view of the philosophy of radiation safety. a few may, in spite of the fact that, desire to argue that the acknowledgement by way of Iraq of its three-pronged improvement of nuclear guns in stipulations of secrecy and antagonism used to be both major and certainly as a lot a deter minant of the way forward for peaceable nuclear strength because the Chernobyl coincidence. however it needs to be transparent that the advancements of guns and electrical energy professional duction usually are not inescapably sure jointly; the Iraqi guns application was once now not associated with any peaceable strength development.

In conclusion, we have shown that indicator organisms such as total coliforms can be readily inactivated by the electron beam in secondary effluent. It also appears that the type of effluent will have some effect on the inactivation of these microorganisms. In the case where the effluent had been previously chlorinated, the microorganisms were much more readily inactivated. S kGy. Total bacteria were readily inactivated in the raw and un chlorinated secondary effluent. It appears that for a reasonable total dose of 6 to 7 kGy, one can expect approximately four to five logs of inactivation of coliform microorganisms and total bacteria.

The net result of this energy dissipation is the production of ions and electronically excited atoms, and molecules, along the path of irradiation. It has been found that the nature of the radiation does not influence the identity of species formed in the given adsorber to an appreciable degree, but it does influence local concentrations depending on the density of the adsorber. The different chemical effects due to different types of radiation in a given system, therefore, are due to the different densities of reactive species produced along the track of the individual particles.
